The International Road Transport Union (IRU) urges the European Union to make coach mobility a fundamental element of its Sustainable Tourism Strategy, which will guide its future tourism development. The High-Level Strategic Dialogue in Brussels showed that coaches serve as vital components for both international travel and sustainable tourism development. The IRU’s request demonstrates that coaches provide essential transportation services, which enable tourists to travel between cities and remote areas while offering budget-friendly and environmentally friendly travel options throughout Europe.
The EU’s strength as a global tourism destination lies in its diverse offerings, from major cities to rural and cultural sites. Coaches are vital to providing seamless travel between these locations, linking airports, ports, and remote attractions. With the rise of overtourism in major capitals, coaches offer a sustainable alternative, enabling visitors to reach off-the-beaten-path locations while reducing dependence on private cars.
IRU stresses that coaches help alleviate congestion in high-density tourist areas by offering large capacity at an affordable cost, helping to maintain both sustainability and tourist satisfaction. Across the EU, there are approximately 650 different access restrictions in urban areas, often implemented inconsistently, creating significant operational hurdles for coach operators.
